Choose the Right Business for Yourself

Choose the right business for yourself; it is something you want to give some consideration. After all, this will be a business you will be doing, and hopefully, for a long time. If what you decide to do, becomes something you don’t like doing after a couple of years, chances are, you won’t be passionate about it, and possibly begin to work on it less and less. See where I’m going with this?

Things to Consider

You may already have your business idea in mind. If so, that is great. But I’d still give this a read. Things to consider with anything you’re contemplating getting into business with. If there is a start-up cost, and how big or small that cost would be?

Become your own boss today, work from homeConsider the skills that would be required. But a few are talents you have to be born with, LOL For those that need to teach, remember that often involves research. And usually a lot of it! Heck, research is a vital part of my business, good thing I don’t mind it.

One last thing, how much of your time will you need to commit to your business. If you’re still working a full-time job, your time would be somewhat limited. These are essential things that should be considered if you’re serious about becoming successful with your business.

And these ingredients are a must. Either you have them or you don’t. It’s all up to you. Planning, hard work, determination, and no matter what goes wrong, never give up! All of these will decide whether you’re a success with your business, or not. Keep that in mind. And the very best to you on your journey to success!

What Have You Always Wanted to Do?Become your own boss today, work from home

Have you always wondered what it would be like to work for yourself? Have you any ideas as to what you’ve wanted to do. My husband will occasionally mention/complain, how rich he’s made employers he’s wor’s a Crane Operator, a welder by trade, which got me to thinking, what about making myself rich! Then when I became unable to work, I let my dream grow. I’ve dug my heels in and started my own affiliate marketing business. It is not easy, but no one said it would be. And I had a lot of time on my hands, so I went for it.

In the beginning, I worked 12 to 16 hours a day, 6 or 7 days a week. I was that committed. I wanted that success! I now have cut myself back to 8 to 12 hour days a week, and no more than six days. With the current hours I keep no, I am more productive. After about six months or so from starting, I got pretty burnt out. Not good. I’m always learning what works and what doesn’t. So get used to tweaking things here and there, it’s all part of being in business for yourself.

Pick a Dream

Has it been always a dream of yours? Perhaps you don’t have a particular idea for a business, maybe one of these will spark your interest! Remember, what needs to be considered hand what will work for you.

Become your own boss today, work from home

Baked Goods – If your good at this, this could become a very lucrative business for you. If people are always raving about your cute cupcakes, cookies,  or extravagant wedding cakes, your talent is already known, and can only grow. Depending on what state you are in, you may need to obtain a license.

Bed & Breakfast – If you buy a home or an inn, then you’re looking at a lot of start-up money. It would be cheaper to open up your home and start booking guests. Booking guests are made easy with apps.

Beer Brewery – This business can become a cash cow, again, my opinion. If you know anything or two about brewing beers, you’ll always have parties that you can cater to.

Caterer – Here is a business that can start from your home. Start catering to small home parties, working your way up to intimate parties, weddings, etc. You may or may not need a license, but I would local small business authorities.

Child Care – You could do babysitting or open up in-home care. I remember growing up as a kid, a lot of my friend’s moms had in-home childcare.

Cleaning Service – No degrees needed here. To make this a successful business, you will need to have the knowledge, to run a successful business. And a lot of elbow grease. You can choose from carpet cleaning, commercial cleaning, house cleaning, laundry, window washing, or pool cleaning, to name a few.

Consulting business – If you have a particular area that you are knowledgeable about, you have a start to one of the most popular companies. Marketing and networking will be a must for finding clients to consult.

Create Apps – Creating apps is something I’ve been thinking more and more about trying, myself. It is rather challenging to do. Or so I’ve been told, and if you don’t have a tech degree, you may want to consider having a partner. It takes a lot of work before even getting it into an app store.

Data Entry – You can use your phone or computer to find micro-jobs. Although the pay isn’t much, you have more time in which do more of this kind of work, and your bank account will begin to grow. This line of work is more of a side business, for very few have made enough for full-time income business.

Dog Walking – If you are like my youngest daughter and love dogs, this could be a good business for you. You’ll need to be able to handle many dogs at once. Finding people who are willing to pay for you to walk their dog(s) will involve networking and marketing.

Dog Trainer – You could do this with your dog walking business. It will take more experience and education. But those that have a way with dogs, this can become a good business, right up your alley.

eBay – I have an article in the works about selling on eBay, as well as having an eBay store. I did it years ago for a local guy that was into selling antiques. And we made perfect money. But being a mom of 3 active daughters, I couldn’t devote the amount of time this gentleman wanted me to. Knowing the value of what your selling is a must. Researching comes in handy too. This business itself has many considerations to think about before you start selling. There is a lot of good material on anything related to selling/buying/etc. On the eBay website.

Editorial Services – Take your pick; becoming a blogger (which is what I do as well) freelance writing, proof-reading, publishing a book. All of the businesses can be self-taught.

Eldercare – Eldercare, a caregiver, is another possibility. If it’s a senior that needs to sit with, feed, and possibly do some light housekeeping, I don’t believe any certification is necessary. But one is required if you’ll be caring for someone with a medical condition especially if you’ll be handling medication.

Flea Market Vendor – This is another business I’ve done when my girls when they were younger. Today you still have the flea markets that you travel to with your merchandise, set up a booth, and sell for that day or weekend. There are also indoor flea markets; this is what I did, where you stock your booth and leave. Your items are sold with a number assigned to your booth. Weekly I received a paycheck, minus any debit card fees. Many do this selling along with online selling. It is time-consuming, but it can also bring in a lot of cash.

Graphic Design – I did this 20 years ago. It started as a hobby, and then I was earning a decent income. I still do some work on the side, that affords me some picket cash. What helps you to become more successful at this business is a plan and a portfolio. You’ll need these to show potential clients; without them, clients will be few and far between.

Greeting Cards – Humor, poetry, etc., if your good at any of these, you can become

Handmade Jewelry – I know several people that do this line of work. Some make more money than others. I believe the more talent, the more you can earn.

Instructor – Piano or violin lessons. Tennis, racquetball. Whatever you’re good at, teach it. I see a lot of online teaching on knitting or crocheting. Teach cooking or painting. The possibilities are endless.

Interior Decorator – If you have what it takes to be decorator, then build an impressive portfolio, so that you can start getting clients. Depending on what kind of area you choose to specialize in, you will more than likely need a degree.

Landlord/Property Management – If you have the money to invest, this can become a great home-based business. There is a lot of work involved. Isn’t not just finding tenants, but there are other considerations as well. Lots of times, there is more work than one person can handle, and that’s where a property manager can be hired to help.

Multi-Level Marketing, is also known as direct selling or network marketing. And it is a popular in-home business. Examples: Amway, Avon, HerbalLife, ItWorks, Mary Kay, Scentsy, Tupperware, Young Living. These are just a few of the top 100 businesses.

Patent an Item/Invention – You can build a business around your invention or item. It’s not impossible, but it takes dedication and patience. I would assume a fair amount of money would be needed with this kind of business.

Personal Trainer – You will need certification as well as experience to build yourself a personal trainer business. Having that experience and certification will help you create a clientele, and this can be another full-time income business.

Pet Grooming – This business can be done from your home, or take it on the road for mobile pet grooming. I’ve considered getting schooling so that I can groom my dog. I have a family member that has a shop that she does pet grooming. She makes a full-time income with it.

Pet Sitting – Pet sitting, as well as house sitting,  requires marketing and networking to get the word out about your business. Depending on where you live would probably depend on how much revenue your business could generate. This is just my opinion. I know in Florida, with the ‘snowbird’ population, house sitting and maintenance can be a good side job income during the summer months.

Photography – If you have an eye for it, this is a low-cost business that you can venture into. With everything being digital today, digital cameras are way cheaper than film cameras from long ago. Let me give you something to consider here; this is a very competitive business field. So again, do research, especially in your area. Give the thought of a specialty. Such as babies, children, pets, proms, Realtor homes, school pictures, senior pictures, or weddings.

Real Estate Agent – Although this can become a lucrative business, it is not a quick start one. You will need to obtain a Realtor license. It is best to start with an agency to begin with. This is a business that allows for a little more flexibility than most.

Transcription – Earn money from home as a transcriptionist. If you have excellent typing skills, you can be contracted out by companies. You’ll need experience. To make a decent income, you will need to have a good client base when you start. The most popular in this line of work is medical transcription. Usually, there are classes involved in learning this specialty.

Travel Agent – Although it takes experience in the travel industry, one can start a home-based travel agency. I would think this could be a very lucrative business.

Tutoring – If you have any experience with teaching, then an online business or in-home business. Marketing is needed to develop a client base. But it will bring in an extra amount of cash, once you establish one.

Virtual Call Center – Offering your services as a home-based call center agent can actually either be a home business or a telecommuting job. A lot of companies that use this kind of agents hire them as employees or contract their services.

Woodworking – My husband is interested in doing. And he’s very good at it. You can custom make furniture. Patio furniture. My husband has found where you can build a coffee table or end table, as well as a pet kennel that can be decorated and made all comfy for your furbabies. When you’re gone, it could be their safe place. You can also make picnic tables, etc. Any woodworking can become a full-time business or something you do on the weekend. But it is a great way to earn cash. Selling online is another avenue or an added avenue for selling your crafts.

The Sky is the Limit

There are so many reasons why people find starting there own business appealing. Read my article, “What’s so Awesome Working from Home.” There is another list that can be endless. Remember that old saying, ‘if you can dream it, you can achieve it?’ It is so genuine. And the sky is the limit!

If you are serious, willing to make the sacrifice, this can be done. It’ll take hard work, and you will not get rich overnight. First off, a business plan is needed. Research the hell on your business choice. If required, do you have the money for any start-up costs? Ask yourself, and be completely honest, do you have the skillset for what it is your interested in doing? What kind of commitment can you give to your business? Is or can your home be set up to be an in a home-based business?  Let these questions get your wheels going. And if you can’t meet the criteria listed above, you may want to reconsider your choice. Don’t just jump in with both your feet, that’s unprofessional and usually leads you to be an unsuccessful business owner.

  1. There are literally so many options here they’re endless. I’ve always said to choose a business you’re passionate about, one that makes you want to commit eight to ten hours of work toward per day if you can, or if you work full-time, commit to in your free time. For me, I have a blog centered around my own products, plus other products I’ve found passion in as well. I’m also getting back into fitness, and while it may not be a work from home gig, starting an affiliate blog in that field will also work wonders. Again, the opportunity is endless here.

    1. Hi Todd,

You’re a prime example of how many different ways one can go with loving what they’re doing/working.  You’re doing it!!  LOL

Good luck to you on your latest endeavor.  I’m sure you’ll do just great with it!

      Thanks for stopping by,
      =)   Laura

  2. The business I chose to set up is my own blog. Even though, describing it as a business makes it lose a little of its “wow” factor. Unfortunately, we have work connected with misery. Anyway, I love working on it. And I believe I’m getting better and better at it.

Something else I always wanted to do professionally is photography. I want to travel a lot and with some photography course, who knows? I may get good at it!

    1. Hi Jenny,

I, too, love working on my blog.

That sounds like a beautiful idea with photography.  I am big on traveling, particularly beaches.  Anywhere, where it is warm.  LOL

Thank you for stopping by and the very best to you on your blog and any new endeavors,
      =)   Laura

  3. That’s an awesome article. You have created a very well researched and dedicated list of different business to consider. I was in tutoring business previous year, but I was always missing marketing flavor. Now, I’m planning again to re start it. Can you give me some suggestions of marketing? Is it important to advertise on local news paper? Or, there are better ways available.

This particular article is very useful for me, it gave me new ideas to consider as well. It will be very useful for many. Thanks a lot for putting this information together and sharing it.

    1. Hi,

I’m so glad you like my article.  It’s good to know when something you wrote helps people.

As for your questions.  I don’t know how you stand with cash.  Personally, I went with social media first.  Particularly Pinterest.  I also started a Facebook page.  I post on Facebook, Pinterest, and Twitter the most.   If you have the cash then go with newspapers.  Also, you might want to try business cards.  Again, if you have the cash.  If not, wait till you make money.  Print out flyers, just get your name out there, you’ll need a client base to be successful.

I hope this helps somewhat.  If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask.  You can also reach me at LCEndahl@takinbackconttrol

  4. Hi Chrissie, You have certainly come up with a huge number of ideas, some of which I have tried and been successful.

Working from home is a great thing if you have the support and encouragement from your partner. Another thing I find is being committed not only to excellent work but also to keeping to your time scheduled to work. If you find it difficult with time management and not being able to cope with the housework and the work you have chosen to do, it might be a good idea to find an assistant for the business or someone to do the housework.

Another idea is becoming a garden designer which might be something you and your partner can work on together.

I am sure that you have given people a lot of food for thought and perhaps great hope of earning from home.

    1. Hi Jill,

I hope someone will find their passion for this list.

When it comes to time management, I just recently discovered that I can not multi-task.  I get nothing productive at all done.  One thing at a time, and I become Superman.  LOL  So much more productive.  Some people can multi-task, successfully, while others can’t.  No problem with that.

Thank you for your suggestions and for stopping by,
      =)   Laura
